The Second Era

The majority of the second era is dominated by the breakdown of the Elven kingdom. The Elven nobility at the time hoarded all magical knowledge and used their formidable arcane power to keep the lower classes in check. The first group to branch off of the elven kingdom was a small group of revolutionaries, which stole a spell book that was dedicated to a ritual that was supposed to make them stronger and tougher. They gathered one moonless night in the shadows of the ancient trees and preformed the ritual. Well, it worked. Their once thin bodies began to thicken with muscles and a primal rage filled their head. They had been transformed into the creatures that we now know as Orcs. They tried to use their new found strength to overthrow the established government, but elves that used to be neutral in the conflict, upon seeing the hideous form of the revolutionaries quickly rallied behind the high elf government to quell the uprising. The surviving orcs were then banished from Ravenwood and settled on the opposite side of the continent in Gargoth forming tribes and quickly finding a home amidst the goblin, gnolls, and ogres that already inhabited the land.

The Elven nobility, in an attempt to prevent further uprising from the lower classes, began allowing access to basic primal magic but still maintained tight control over the arcane magic. This seemed to appease most elves for around 30 years. But it seems elves are just as willing to repeat the mistakes of the past. A sect of elves began worshiping the dark spider goddess known as Lolth. In exchange for their service, she gave them access to some of her forbidden arcane secrets. After practicing in secret for nearly two decades, the sect finally made their move. Under the cover of darkness they emptied the libraries of arcane knowledge and scattered books around the elven populace. Their main goal accomplished, Lolth gave them another objective to prove their loyalty. The sect was to destroy the magical crystals holding the temple to Correlion Larethian in the high elves flying city, Skyhome. After destroying all the crystals but one, they found the last one was being guarded by an ancient elven priestess, who was nearly millennia old, blessed with even longer life due to her years of service. The traitorous elves killed her and destroyed the last crystal sending the temple crashing down into the forest below, but they paid a heavy price. The dying priestess prayed to her god to curse her murderers, and Correlion, upon witnessing the death of his favored servant and the destruction of his temple granted her final request. The traitors were cursed to suffer every day of their incredibly long lifetime. With every dawn of a new sun, its light would burn their flesh. That that moment the sun began to rise and the traitors watched in horror as their flesh burned until it was as black as coal. They fled to the darkest parts of Ravenwood and slowly retreated to the caves underneath Black Rock Mountains, a mountain range known for its many volcanoes especially the great volcano Mount Yanguin. They sought a cure to their affliction, but Lolth could only do so much. She stopped the sun from burning their skin outright, but they were permanently charred black and would forever be sensitive to sunlight. Thus came to be the dark elf race and the end of the second era.
